Fall Garden To-Do's
- Plant spring bulbs - plan ahead for the first blooms next year.
- Rake your leaves - an alternative is to mow the leaves to be used as mulch and to recycle nutrients in your garden.
- Layer mulch on your garden beds - this will help protect your perennials from the cold.
- Aerate and fertilize your lawn - regular maintenance keeps your lawn looking fresh.
- Mow and seed your lawn - if you need to patch any spots, sow some cold-season grass seed in the fall.
- Clear eavestroughs, gutters and downspouts - ensure good water flow to prevent property damage over the rainy season.
- Pack up your patio - safeguard your outdoor furniture, barbeque, and other valuables by tucking them under a cover or moving them indoors.
- Pressure wash your deck - once dry, adding a weatherproofing stan can further lengthen the life of your deck.
- Seal air leads - check around windows and doors to see if you need to replace any weatherstripping and seals.
- Install a smart thermostat - technology has come a long way in helping you save money and energy! Check out BC Hydro's rebates for energy-efficient products.
Market Balancing Out
Compared to one year ago, there were fewer active listings in September for single-family homes, condo apartments, and row/townhouses. However, sales of each have gone up year-on-year, though activity was more sluggish than expected last month. Recent trends suggest that the sellers market of the past several years is now transitioning into a more balanced market that favours buyers. While the average cost of a single-family home on Vancouver Island continues to climb, several communities, including Parksville/Qualicum, saw a decrease in the average cost between August and September 2023.
